DFID (the Department for International Development) is the British government department responsible for delivering our overseas aid programme.
The Department aims to assist partner countries reduce poverty and make progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals agreed at the United Nations Millennium Summit in September 2000. The Goals range from halving global poverty and hunger to protecting the environment, improving health and sanitation and tackling illiteracy and discrimination against women.
- DfID has been active in Central Asia since 1992.
- It graduated from Kazakhstan in 2005 due to the progress made by the country on economic growth and poverty reduction.
- DfID now focuses on Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. In Kyrgyzstan, DfID focuses on supporting governance and HIV and AIDS programmes. It provides sector budget support, together with other donors, to assist implementation of the National Health Sector Strategy.
- It works with other donors to help provide clean drinking water to rural villages, and supports community-driven social and economic projects in villages throughout the country.
- DfID also supports budget reform and greater accountability within government.
- The large regional HIV and AIDS programme provides support to harm reduction, reducing the transmission of the virus among vulnerable groups.
