Projects & funding

The FCO’s mission statement is Better World, Better Britain. The Embassy has identified project priority areas, which are aimed primarily at Human Rights, Democratisation and Good Governance - to promote advocacy and respect for human rights, the rule of law and democratic norms on the one hand, and stability, economic prosperity and progress on the other.

To improve fairness of local Council elections in Kyrgyzstan by increasing awareness of and ability to defend voters’ rights.
“Support Centre on Women Rights” NGO “Golden Goal” in Osh To foster the civil activity of women in promoting democratic processes in 4 village administrations in Osh Province of Kyrgyzstan through increasing knowledge on civic, electoral and political rights and tools for protecting interests on the state level.
“Conflict prevention and mitigation in the south of Kyrgyzstan”

NGO “Leilek-Daanyshman”, NGO “Daanazat Ordo”, Rural investment council “Vostochniy” in Batken

To strengthen the capacity of community-based NGOs in Batken Oblast, Kyrgyzstan, to resolve local and cross-border conflicts peacefully.
“Civil Assistance for the Kyrgyz Border Service” NGO “Ferghana Valley Lawyers Without Borders” To reduce potential conflict in Ferghana Valley by increasing respect for and application of human rights by the Border Service of the Kyrgyz Republic.
"Strengthening internet journalism in Kyrgyzstan" Institute for Public Policy in Bishkek and Bishkek Press Club
To strengthen internet journalism and contribute to promotion of freedom of speech in Kyrgyzstan.
"Strengthening women’s movement in Central Asia – AWID conference" INTRAC in Bishkek and Centre for Gender Studies in Almaty To strengthen the skills, strategies and campaign alliances of women activists from Kazakhstan and other Central Asian states through attendance of a group of Central Asian women’s organisations at the Association of Women in Development (AWID) conference in South Africa in November 2008.



 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Priority areas for project funding in 2009-2010 are:

  1. To support progress made on criminal justice reform in Kyrgyzstan, including implementation of OPCAT to include projects supporting introduction of jury trials, effective implementation of abolition of death penalty and implementation of a National Preventative Mechanism to combat torture in places of detention.
  2. To support progress made on democratic reforms and civil liberties, including in southern Kyrgyzstan, reducing potential for conflict, to include projects supporting reduction of the structural and institutional barriers for ethnic Uzbek and Tajik minorities in southern Kyrgyzstan, improvement of capacity of civil society to contribute to conflict prevention, improvement of professionalism of mass media, including in Ferghana Valley and fair and democratic elections.

“Independent Monitoring of Kyrgyz Presidential Elections 2009 ” Association “Taza Shoiloo” in Bishkek To promote greater transparency and fairness in the 2009 Kyrgyz Presidential Elections by bringing together local non-governmental organisations to conduct election monitoring.
 
“Reducing tension and preventing conflicts at the Kyrgyz-Uzbek state borders”
PU “Ferghana Valley Lawyers Without Borders” Reducing tension and preventing conflicts between citizens and state controlling agencies in border areas and at the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border.
Strengthen the Kyrgyz Ombudsman institution to  apply effective pro-active Human Rights mechanisms  UNDP / OHCHR in Bishkek To strengthen the capacity of the Kyrgyz Ombudsman to become an effective institution addressing patterns of human rights violations. through applying a pro-active strategy.
