Exercise STEPPE EAGLE takes place this year on the Illisky training Area about 40km north east of Almaty in the south of the country. The exercise will run throughout September, although the main participating bodies we be in country from 10-29 Sep 09.
This year, in addition to the US contingent which will be teaching the Kazakh Airmobile Forces (AMF) in Brigade level operations and use of simulation methods, the UK contingent will be provided by 7 RIFLES. This is a Territorial Army Light Infantry Battalion from the south of the UK. This Battalion will be assisting the Kazakhs in field operations up to Battalion level, as well as conducting a number of live firing exercises on the extensive range complex at Illisky.
The aim of the exercise is to train and assess KAZBRIG, which consists of a Brigade HQ and 2 infantry battalions, in its ability to conduct Peace Support Operations, working within a multinational framework.
7 Rifles will also bring its band and buglers, who will perform at a number of events including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, an official wreath laying in Panfilov Park and at the Battalion Cocktail Party.
