Main areas of activity

We have a wide-ranging dialogue with Kazakhstan, which we regard as a strategic partner in the Central Asian region. This includes energy issues, good governance, democratisation and human rights, the investment climate,  regional and international security and stability.

The HM Ambassador directs the work of the Embassy. He is the representative of the UK in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Political Section

Political Section is the channel through which most government-to-government business between Britain and Kazakhstan is conducted. The Political Team report to the British Government on political developments in Kazakhstan. They work closely with the Kazakhstan Government on foreign policy issues, including the OSCE Chairmanship, Criminal Justice, Non-Proliferation, and Energy. Throughout 2009 the British Embassy in Astana will be the contact point for other Embassies on all NATO issues.

Projects section

The Projects section receives project applications and supervises the implementation of projects to support the Embassy's mission and objectives in Kazakhstan.
Our Project work includes:

• promoting advocacy and respect for human rights, the rule of law and democratic norms on the one hand, and stability, economic prosperity and progress on the other;
• promoting more effective government policy in the energy sector and more efficient use and regulation of energy resources while respecting environmental considerations and tackling climate change.

Trade and Investment section

The Embassy’s Trade and Investment Section falls under the umbrella of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI). Its staff offer advice on the Kazakhstani market and provide services to British companies operating in the country.

Defence section

The Defence section manages a bilateral programme of contacts, training, seminars and courses conducted between the British Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Defence of Kazakhstan.

Communications section

The Communications section deals with public enquiries about Britain as well as with enquiries from the Kazakh press and government departments about British Government policy. It issues press releases and other information about the UK.
