Energy Efficiency and Climate Change

Climate change

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office is committed to promoting a low carbon, high growth global economy.

Kazakhstan has been identified as a high priority in the area of energy security. Through our project work we therefore hope to promote and support greater Kazakh commitment to:

  • the diversification of oil and gas supply routes from the Caspian basin to the EU;
  • the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI); and
  • implementing energy efficiency and renewables legislation.

Current or completed projects include:

Purpose: Major energy-inefficient businesses identify and implement energy efficiency improvements prior to the implementation of proposed local energy savings legislation.

Implementing organisation: Irbaris Ltd. For purposes of the present project Irbaris works with Climate Chamge Coordination Centre.

Purpose: To improve the long-term economic, environmental and social stability of oil and gas investment in Kazakhstan by producing, via a multi-stakeholder process, a widely disseminated good practice manual for the drafting and implementation of the next generation of oil and gas contracts.

Implementing Organisations: International Institute for Environment and Development NB

Purpose: To support the national strategic policy framework development in efficient energy use and renewables sectors through wider and more active stakeholder consultation in drafting process and application of best international standards.

Implementing Organisations: United Nations Development Programme

Purpose: Project is aimed to encourage Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan individually to recognise and begin to address internationally the immediate danger to shipping and to the unique environment in the Caspian, and so to security of energy export routes, through unregulated maritime activity.

Implementing Organisations: "Oil Spill" Ltd

Purpose: Creation of a unified set of energy efficiency, renewables and alternative (nuclear) energy policies that will accelerate Kazakhstan's progress towards a high growth, low-carbon economy.

Implementing Organisations: LECG

Play games and see how the climate can change!

National Energy Foundation (NEF) have produced an interactive 3D game aimed at the under 25's Logicity. It places individuals in a virtual environment and lets them experiment and experience the potential effect that individual actions can have on the planet before it's too late.
