Energy Economics Course Description

The course is based on the view that energy economics cannot be properly understood without an appreciation of energy technology - something that our interdisciplinary organisations are ideally placed to provide.  Similarly, economic and environmental regulation, and energy policy, have powerful impacts on energy markets.  To show these impacts, the course will cover:

• National and international energy marketsEnergy Scenarios: their construction and use;
• Different energy sources, including conventional fossil fuels, nuclear power, renewable energy and liquefied natural gas;
• Prospects for, and barriers to, low-carbon energy;
• Investment in energy, including in exploration, development, deployment and production

Chevening Scholarship Criteria

1. The main target for Chevening Scholarships Scheme is that 20% of the annual intake should reach senior positions within 10 years of completing their awards with a further 20% progressing towards senior positions.

2. Applicants must, therefore, have the potential to rise to positions of leadership and influence. They will need to demonstrate that they possess the personal, intellectual and interpersonal attributes reflecting this potential. Although scholars must meet the academic requirements for their courses of study, academic excellence is not the determining selection criterion. They must also:

• have an adequate standard of English, ie a 6.5 marking or over in IELTS. Please note that some courses now require an IELTS score of 7. (In exceptional cases, to be agreed by PDG, pre-sessional English language training may be provided subject to the merits of each case and against Posts' allocation).
• be a national of a country other than the UK, at the time of applying for the award, and intend to return there at the end of the period of study (dual nationals will be considered by PDG on a case-by-case basis);

and normally:

• already hold a degree of an equivalent standard to at least a good UK second-class Honours degree;
• not already have received or be currently receiving financial benefit from a previous HMG-funded Scholarship.
